Headaches, Migraines, and Nerve Pain Treatments

Headaches, migraines, and nerve pain can cause debilitating discomfort that makes day-to-day functioning a struggle. At The Pain Free Institute at Miracle Mile Medical Group, we offer specialized treatments targeted to alleviate these conditions, providing patients with powerful, long-lasting relief.

Finding Relief from Persistent Head Pain

Persistent head pain can arise from various internal factors, including muscle tension, nerve irritation, and vascular changes. A thorough clinical evaluation is crucial to first identify the underlying cause and then determine the most appropriate treatment approach for you.

Types of Treatments for Head Pain

Continuous headaches, migraines, and nerve pain commonly require more targeted treatments for extended relief. Here are the types of treatments we offer:

Occipital Nerve Blocks

The goal of this treatment is to block nerve signals and reduce pain transmission. We use occipital nerve blocks specifically to treat chronic migraines and occipital neuralgia, a condition characterized by sharp, shooting pain in the back of the head.

During this quick and non-invasive procedure, we inject a local anesthetic, sometimes combined with a corticosteroid, near the occipital nerves at the base of the skull. Local anesthesia is used to numb the injection site.

Occipital nerve blocks have minimal side effects, with the exception of temporary numbness or scalp tingling immediately following the procedure. Pain relief can last for weeks to several months, depending on the individual and the condition.

Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block (SPG Block)

The sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) is a cluster of nerves located deep in the nasal cavity that plays a role in facial pain, migraines, and cluster headaches. We use SPG blocks to target this ganglion for more targeted pain relief.

This procedure involves administering a local anesthetic to the SPG, either through the nasal passages or via a transoral approach. Patients may experience a brief sensation of pressure or discomfort during the procedure. Pain relief often takes effect immediately and may last for hours to days, or even weeks with repeated treatments.

Trigeminal Nerve Blocks

Trigeminal neuralgia is a severe facial pain condition caused by irritation of the trigeminal nerve. For this condition, we may recommend trigeminal nerve blocks to target this nerve and provide lasting relief.

During the procedure, we inject a local anesthetic, often in conjunction with a corticosteroid, near the branches of the trigeminal nerve. This effectively blocks the nerve signals and alleviates the sharp, stabbing pain characteristic of trigeminal neuralgia.

Patients may experience a brief stinging sensation during the injection, and temporary numbness or tingling in the face is common after the procedure. Most can expect pain relief to last from weeks to months, and repeated injections may be necessary as part of a holistic pain management program.
